A Great Time to Join the AMETEK Land Team

Peter Unwin - Global Industry Manager for MetalsThis year, I joined AMETEK Land as Global Industry Manager for Metals. I have spent over 30 years in the metals industry working in a customer facing environment and this new role is a great and exciting next step.

As a specialist in non-contact infrared temperature measurement, it would be easy to think that “customers will come to us” but I am pleased to say that AMETEK Land is committed to serving its customers with the very best temperature measurement solutions for vertical markets such as metals, glass, power and hydrocarbon industries.

Coming from the metals industry with experience of building process lines, I am aware of the importance of measuring and monitoring critical process parameters in high volume production of strip products. Producing strip safely, at the highest quality, at the most competitive price, consistently on a 24/7 basis, is a difficult challenge with so many possible variables in play, for example in complex processes such as continuous hot dip galvanizing lines which typically produce 500,000 tonnes per annum.

With half, and growing, of the global Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) capacity aimed at satisfying the demands of the high quality automotive market and with strong competition from lighter weight aluminium products, new stronger advanced steels are continuously being developed which require more accurate control of temperature during heating and cooling zones within these process lines.

S&P Global Platts Global Metals Awards 2019 FinalistFor many years we have provided non-contact temperature measurement solutions for continuous annealing furnaces but for the first time, we are now able to provide spot temperature measurements of galvanized strip as it exits the zinc pot. The new SPOT GS infrared pyrometer has been specially developed for this application, which for anyone familiar with infrared technology presented our development team with the challenge of measuring at relatively low temperature on a highly reflective surface, especially at the exit of the zinc pot. This new development has resulted in the SPOT GS being nominated for an award at the S&P Global Metals Awards Ceremony this year.

The technical details of the SPOT GS can be found here, or it can be seen at AISTech 2019 in Pittsburgh, US during May and at Thermprocess 2019 in Dusseldorf, Germany in June.

The new SPOT GS is one of many examples of our commitment to help customers solve their temperature measurement problems and is the reason why I am proud to now be part of the AMETEK Land team. A great time to join!
